A Seasonal Staple: Wool Coats
Beloved by starlets like Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn to today’s biggest celebrities, the wool coat is a testament to timeless wardrobe pieces. It can be found at a variety of fashion retailers in a plethora of colours. I personally own one cream vintage wool coat and a black one in a trench style. If you, like me, live in a cooler climate where you often have to choose between style and warmth, the wool coat is perfect. It’s a no-brainer in the fall, but in the winter… Well, things can get tricky. If you want to continue to rock your wool coat in the winter, you need to layer up. That means long underwear of sorts. This could be leggings (fleece lined is best) and a long sleeve tee that works seamlessly under your usual outfits. I promise it is well worth it, for when you walk down the snowy streets of your town or city, you get the satisfaction of knowing that you did not sell your (fashionable) soul for warmth.
Here are some examples of wool coats throughout the decades, proving that this closet staple never goes out of style.
Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s alongside costar George Peppard. She wears a tomato-colored wool coat with a fur bucket hat.
The queen of Vogue herself, Anna Wintour, looks fetching in a gingham wool coat.
Beth Harmon in The Queen’s Gambit, portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy, makes a statement in the iconic White Queen look at the series’ finale. This is similar to my vintage cream one!
Ali McGraw in Love Story proves that cold weather fashion is the best fashion!
Marlene Dietrich knows how to pull together a look! This classic style icon knows that a camel wool trench is cool weather’s best friend.
